Meet the Media and Gender Advocates of our ‘gender sensitive journalism’ training

KATHMANDU/ February 16:  We are pleased to announce the successful awardees of the fellowship programme for journalists of Nepal covering the seven provinces and all types of media outlets, as part of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) supported ‘Promoting gender sensitivity in the media content and newsroom operations through capacity building of journalists in Nepal’ project.

The 30 fellows including 21 women, selected on the basis of their story pitches and dedicated engagement in two rounds of training webinars –represent a wide range of experience in journalism in radio stations, television channels, newspapers and online news portals.

The virtual mentoring programme for these fellows will commence on 18 February 2022, featuring remarks from Amanda Strohan, Deputy Ambassador of Canada to Nepal and representatives of Media Action Nepal.  It will be followed by mentoring sessions by Laxman Datt Pant, renowned media scholar and the Chairperson of Media Action Nepal, Prof. Mariam Gersamia, Chairwoman of Media and Communication Educational and Research Center (MCERC), Georgia and Dr. Anshu Arora, Media Expert/Educator, India covering approaches to promoting  gender sensitivity in Newsrooms, identifying  and preparing gender sensitive stories, and understanding and preventing gendered disinformation  in news & op-ed

This mentoring programme provides an opportunity to selected fellows to develop newsroom and reporting strategies for promoting gender sensitivity in the media content. Based on the accepted pitches, each participant will prepare/produce and disseminate two in-depth stories covering various dimensions of gender equality.
