KATHMANDU | May 5:  Media Action Nepal condemns the death threat issued to journalist Shiv Adhikari Yadubanshi, the Madhesh Bureau Chief of Nepalpress.

Speaking with Media Action Nepal, Yadubanshi shared that he received the death threat merely for writing a news story on police personnel. “I received a death threat via WhatsApp from an unknown number, stating that he would kill everyone, including me,” he said. “A spam call was made between 7:40 and 7:45 p.m. on Sunday (May 3, 2026), claiming to be from the Patna region of India. The caller spoke Hindi.”

“You broke our settings by writing news about the DIG; I will shoot at Janakpur in 10 minutes,” he added, citing the threat he had received.  Following the threat, he filed a complaint with the District Police Office in Dhanusha. He stated that police have informed him that the case is being investigated, but he expressed doubt about the role of police. For some time, Yadubanshi has been writing a series of news stories about Madhesh Province Police Chief DIG Govinda Thapaliya’s collusion with smugglers.

Media Action Nepal calls on authorities to investigate the case, and ensure the safety of journalist Yadubanshi.
