Media Action Nepal condemns attack on journalist Bohara
MEDIA ACTION NEPAL/ February 5: Media Action Nepal has condemned the attack on Kamal Bahadur Bohara, editor of Palikasamaya.com, a local government-focused online news portal.
Speaking to Media Action Nepal, Bohara revealed that he was physically assaulted over a published news story. On Saturday, February 1, journalist Bohara published a news story criticizing Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah on Palikasamaya.com.
“After the report, I received phone calls from people associated with KMC, as they claimed,” he said. “On February 3 I had gone to attend a program in Anamnagar while I was returning around 6:50 pm’ in the evening. Four to five people in the gang surrounded me and said, “If you are a journalist, it does not imply that you write anything.”
“Following that, two of them hit me strongly on my chest and back. Since then, I have been experiencing breathing problems,” he added.
He went on to say, “Immediately following that incident, I filed a complaint with Tinkune Police Circle. Police have stated that they are searching for them.”
Meantime, Laxman Datt Pant, Executive Director of Media Action Nepal, strongly condemned the attack, stating, “Those who attempt to silence the press through violence must be brought to justice without delay. Authorities must act now to find the culprits and ensure that journalists can work without fear.”
